چکیده

Over the past thirty years the WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointer) user interface paradigm has made the computer into a tool that allows non-specialists to get a variety of tasks done. In recent years, however, the applications available under this interface paradigm have become larger and more unwieldy, in an effort to accomplish distinct functional goals. As a successor to the traditional desktop interface, the Zoomable User Interface (ZUI), sometimes called multi-scale user interface, is a relatively new paradigm. It takes advantage of the user's spatial memory to create a more customized and dynamic working environment. It also facilitates the development of finer-grained applications that automatically interoperate with various types of data objects and other applications. A ZUI uses the metaphor of an infinite twodimensional plane to represent the user's workspace. The user's view of this workspace can be varied both in position and scale by panning and zooming respectively, and the size of the objects in the workspace can be similarly altered. This model creates sufficient space, so that the user's data objects can all be assigned permanent absolute geographic locations, leading to an advantageous use of human spatial intuition.

Navigation Patterns and Usability of Overview+Detail and Zoomable User Interfaces for Maps

The literature on information visualizations establishes the usability of overview+detail interfaces, but for zoomable user interfaces, results are mixed. We compare overview+detail and zoomable user interfaces to understand the navigation patterns and usability of these interfaces. Thirty-two subjects solved navigation and browsing tasks on maps organized in one or multiple levels. We find no ...

Zoomable user interfaces as a medium for slide show presentations

In this paper, we propose Zoomable User Interfaces as an alternative presentation medium to address several common presentation problems. Zoomable User Interfaces offer new techniques for managing multiple versions of a presentation, providing interactive presentation navigation, and distinguishing levels of detail. These zoomable presentations may also offer several cognitive benefits over the...

Zoomable News: Zoom and Animation-Based News Browsing for the Web

With Zoomable News, we attempt to provide a new means of navigating news on the World Wide Web, on existing web browsers using broadly supported, non-proprietary technology. Whereas traditional news sites are navigated by means of scrolling, with changes in level of information abstraction achieved by having users click through to another page, Zoomable News allows dynamic abstraction/ expansio...

ZOIL: A Design Paradigm and Software Framework for Post-WIMP Distributed User Interfaces

This paper introduces ZOIL (Zoomable Object-Oriented Information Landscape), a design paradigm and software framework for post-WIMP distributed, zoomable and object-oriented user interfaces. We present ZOIL’s design principles, functionality and software patterns to share them with other researchers. Furthermore, ZOIL’s implementation as a software framework for C# and WPF (Windows Presentation...
